The Bosphorus Insider 2041.2
The Instanbul Bosphorus began the week with a 3 game series in Bagdad against the Kings.
Game 1 was a 4-0 masterpiece thrown by SP Bert Hackworth. Hackworth struck out three while allowing 5 hits and a walk. He is now 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA on the season.
LF Rich Ayers and 3B Ken Pyke led the offensive charge with homers. Ayers hit a solo shot in the 3rd while Pyke put icing on the cake with a 2-run bomb in the 8th.
The Kings did not help their own cause as they committed three errors in the loss.
Final score: Istanbul wins 4-0
Game 2 saw another complete game win by Istanbul as SP Bernardino Bertoletti flashed a strong pitch hand allowing just 1 unearned run on 3 hits while striking out 3. Bertoletti threw just 107 pitches on the way to his 3rd victory of the season against 1 loss. He is sporting a 3.90 ERA.
On offense, 2B Juan Rodriguez smacked his 4th homer of the season while going 1 for 3 with 2 RBI.
RF Hyung-on Ch’oe hit his 5th dinger on the season with his only hit in 4 at bats.
But the hitter of the game was LF John Garcia. Garcia was 2 for 3 with a walk, scored 2 runs and drove in 2.
Final score: Instanbul wins 6-1
Game 3 was a close, low scoring contest that evolved into a close, high scoring win for the Bosphorus to complete the sweep of the Kings.
SP Claudio Escobedo pitched 6 1/3 strong innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and a walk. He struck out 5 and threw 99 pitches. RP Rodrigo Lugo was slapped around by the Kings after relieving Escobedo. He allowed 4 runs on 4 hits and a walk while geeing just 1 out.
This put Instanbul down 7-4 before having an unearned run score in the 8th off of RP Kunz Shuck. Istanbul raged back in the 9th scoring 4 runs off of RP Lucas Meech. The big hit was a 3 run bomb by 1B Bai-luo Jiu . SS Jose Lopez then walked it off in the bottom of the 10th with his 3rd homer of the season. Lopez was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and that big ribeye steak sandwich.
Final score: Instanbul sweeps 9-8.
The Manama Pearls were the next visitor to the Istanbul Grounds for a 3 game set.
Game 1 saw a nice performance by SP Brendan Carr. Carr pitched 7 innings allowing 3 runs on 9 hits and a walk. He struck out 6 on his way to improving to 4-3 with a 5.04 ERA. CL Bras Gesteira earned his sixth save of the season.
DH Rick Ayers was 2 for 4 (Single, HR) scoring 1 run and collecting 2 RBI. CF Hank Correa was 3 for 5 (2 doubles and a HR) with 2 runs scored and 3 knocked in as the lead off.
Final score: Istanbul wins 7-4.
Game 2 started slowly for both teams but then Manama struck in the 2nd, 4th and 5th innings to take a 5-2 lead. The Pearls then scored 5 more in the 9th to turn the game into a laugher.
RP Schuck did provide some good relief in the middle of the game. He pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed 2 hits and he struck out 1.
SS Lopez was 2 for 4 with a triple and a run scored. LF John Garcia was 2 for 5.
Manama Pearl SP Ernesto Medina earned his 3rd win pitching 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks. He mowed down 6 Bosphori in the win.
Final score: Pearls win 10-3
The Game 3 rubber match saw the Pearls jump out to a 4-0 lead and then withstand a furious comeback to prevail over the Bosphorus at the Grounds.
SP B. Hackworth took the loss allowing 4 runs on 9 hits. He walked none and struck out 3. He labored throughout the 6 innings he pitched throwing 103 pitches, 63 for strikes. He falls to 2-1on the season.
LF J. Garcia was a bright spot going 2 for 4 (2 HR). He is hitting .313 with 13 HR and 37 ribbies on the season.
Pearls SP Angel Guerrero pitched 6 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk. He struck out 5 in earning his 5th win of the season against 2 losses.
Final score: Manama wins 6-4.
The Pearls win the series 2-1. They are 21-21 and 8 games back of Istanbul.
The Bosphorus fall to 29-13 on the season and lead the UMEBA/Burt League by 8 games.

Very nice writeup on the week in Istanbul. They are looking to be in good shape a quarter of the way through the season.
