The Morning Glory 2058.03: Oysters Dig Up 3 from Rule 5 Draft
The Winter Meetings ended last night with the Rule 5 draft. The Oysters drafted 3 players and lost none (EDIT: Oysters lost Muneer bin Khairy to Brooklyn).
With the 17th pick overall, the organization selected SP Kensaku Sato from Nashville. At 24, scouting reports say he's still raw but has some good stuff.
"We like his stuff," said GM Brandon Slouck. "It isn't consistent yet but we like what he may be able to bring to the table. I have confidence in our coaching to bring him along. We're going to work hard to find him a roll so we can keep him around."
In the 2nd round at 48th overall, the Oysters selected CF Ramón Trujillo from Mexico City. Also raw, he's at least only 21 and looks to have a better chance of reaching his potential.
"He's already a good defender and he has a good eye. His bat to ball skills are still a work in progress but I can see him fitting in fine as a 4th or 5th outfielder this year. We don't have many CF options in the organization so targeting a CF was one of our top priorities."
Finally in the 3rd round and 81st overall, the Oysters drafted RP Paul Berry from Charm City. He's pretty much developed and has ML experience.
"Another goal was finding some bullpen arms from wherever we can and we think we have a decent option here. He already has experience. Closing experience. Mixed results but uh, we like his chances a lot. He could pitch meaningful innings this year."
"We're happy with the players we acquired and will give each of them every opportunity to not only break camp with the team, but to stay all year and be a part of our future plans. It won't be done at the expense of competing but will work hard to make sure they succeed and play some part in that success."

Love seeing how the raw rule 5 players end up progressing.

Even if nobody is kept the rule 5 creates some writing fodder and shines a spotlight on a bunch of second tier prospects which I enjoy.
Berry was on my list I just didn’t have the space for multiple picks.

Yeah and you know, I may have to create a short list of Rule 5 players I end up returning. Maybe even league wide. May be a fun little league feature down the line.

Absolutely. It's an easy TN for anyone who struggles creatively like I do sometimes.BaseClogger wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 8:03 amEven if nobody is kept the rule 5 creates some writing fodder and shines a spotlight on a bunch of second tier prospects which I enjoy.

I'd expect Sato gets returned. He's underdeveloped and nowhere near BBA quality. He likely won't ever be close, but I signed him last year as a bullpen filler for minor leagues.
