2034-24: Talons up for League Awards

Post by jiminyhopkins » Tue May 15, 2018 9:14 am

With 24 out of 28 GM's voting, a number of Talons are in consideration for Johnson League end of season awards. Here is a quick rundown:

Reliever of the Year

In what looks to be the closest race of any award (with apologies to the FL Gillstrom), Talons closer Timofei Bakitski has a narrow 3 point lead over Jacksonville's Peter Grady. Grady had a tremendous season, saving 50 games in 93 innings, But the Phoenix relief ace beats him in ERA, FIP, Hits/9, strikeouts, and war. If Timofei wins, it will be his second such award, his first coming in his rookie year of 2031.

Rookie of the Year

The Talons have two young players in this race, and while niether will win the illustrious accolade; finishing 3rd and 4th, respectively, is nothing to laugh at. Phoenix CF Thad Meyer, drafted only 18 months ago, recorded a .271/.326/.402 season, to go with 11 home runs, 47 steals, and 2.4 wars. Helping his case no doubt is Meyer's +10.9 zone rating in center field.

Looking to finish 4th in the race is Talons 3B Joe Pike. It's been quite a story for Joe so far: In 2033 he replaced Carlton Winson at the hot corner for the Talons, and rather infamously generated a remarkable -1.3 wars in only 88 at bats. This season, still with rookie eligibility, Joe started off well and sustained his .271/.317/.441 production all season, stealing 47 bags of his own and posting some good defense at third. Overall it was worth 2.0 wars... not quite Winson territory, but good enough for a guy who's been with the org since the EBA and finally made the most of his chances.

Nebraska Award

SP Jose Trujillo recently signed a contract extension with Phoenix, and its easy to see why: His 5.1 war performance currently has him in fourth place for the JL Nebraska. Trujillo appears on the JL Leaderboards for Ks, K/9, War, and opponents OPS.

For some reason people are voting for Phoenix's GM in this category. We can't figure out why.
