EBA 2025 Amateur Draft Review

Post by udlb58 » Sat Feb 06, 2016 10:54 pm

#1 - Rome - OF Alain Pichon: An 18 yo with extremely high potential. Pichon has the ability to compete for EBA batting titles, hit 20 HR, and steal 20 bases in a season when fully developed. The only real knocks on him are that he's about as developed as a typical teenager (which is to say he is a long way from contributing in the EBA), and his defense may limit him to left field. His inability to get a good read off the bat limits the amount of ground he can cover in center, and his arm is well below average for a right fielder. Despite his defensive limitations, he could become a difference maker at the plate and on the bases.

#2 - London - P Wilmot Schlöndorff: A fairly developed 21 year old, Wilmont has the ability to be a strong, well-rounded starting pitcher. Will probably strikeout around 180 and walk about 75. Has the ability to keep the ball down in the strikezone. Biggest question is if his dominant fastball/curve combo will be enough for him to go deep into games. Could potentially earn a spot on the roster as early as 2026.

#3 - Paris - OF Jean-Luc Lacaze: High risk, high reward type prospect. The 18yo Frenchman covers enough ground to be adequate and has an acceptable arm for the position. That is key, because he is much more valuable if he can be an okay CF. Has the ability to hit 20+ HR and steal 20+ bases when he is fully developed, and he should be a good OBP guy as well. However, he is FAR from reaching his potential (heck, he may not be good enough to play in A ball) and will take a number of years to work his way up.

#4 - Belfast - OF Thomas Lefebvre: Very similar to fellow Frenchman Lacaze. He has the ability to be an adequate defender in center and his value will largely revolve around his ability to stick there. Power bat with patience at the plate, but he may never hit for a high average. I’m not a fan of the EBA contract, as he is probably at least 2-3 years away from an EBA roster, despite being 21, and he will probably burn through his option years quickly.

#5 - Amsterdam - P Kirby MacClune: Solid starting pitching prospect with good enough stuff and an easy arm action that should be repeatable and allow him to have consistent control over his pitches. A solid prospect with #2-3 potential, but I don’t think he was the best starting pitcher available here at 5.

#6 - Brussels - SS Carlton Winson: If the 22 year old is able to stick at short, he has the potential to add a real power bat to the middle infield with the potential to hit around 20 HR. I’m not sold on his ability to be anything more than a below average SS though, and his bat has the potential to be good, but probably not great at the hot corner.

#7 - Munchen - P Bertil Hofstra: Big fan of this 20 year old righty. Hofstra was the top pitcher on the board with three pitches that are good enough to make him a starter, good command, and the potential to be a top of the rotation guy if he can develop his changeup. He’s also fairly developed and could find his way to the EBA in a year or two.

#8 - Madrid - P Francis Tregoning: Nicely developed 21yo reliever. He has a solid fastball and a very good slider. Could be a high K/BB guy that you like to have at the end of your bullpen. Despite all of this, he hasn’t signed yet and it was known he could be a difficult sign going into the draft. Is Madrid picking a difficult to sign prospect here, looking for the supplementary pick in 2026?

Well done sir. I figured the Tregoning signing was win-win with whatever happened. I don't love choosing relievers in the first round but totally wanted to bring him aboard.

Yeah, I've been wondering if it is better to have a team full of guys who are just not quite good enough to get picked up by the MBBA, or if it is better to have an elite player knowing that he will be taken from you at the earliest opportunity.

Thanks for this recap. We need guys like Hofstra in order to rebuild Munchen after we were ransacked by the MBWBA in the Rule 6 draft.

Perhaps. Won't argue. Irrelevant to my comment. I still like Pichon a lot.
