December 1, 2058: Forever Land – Roughly halfway through his planned time in the new training facility that has now been renamed the Bikini Skill Skool, last year’s rookie left fielder Tony Munyiga seems to be doing more than all right. “Tony looks great out there right now,” said Antonio Lara, the team’s third base coach who has been assigned as the go-between to work with the teckno-nerds and Munyiga himself. “He’s getting good reads off the bat, and his routes to line drives and fly balls are both looking a lot better.”
This is news to the ears of Bikini’s front office, who were likely looking at the team’s horrific defensive results, and Munyiga’s -12 Zone Rating across both AAA and the BBA last year, and wondering if Munyiga’s glove was going to be an impediment to keeping his .328/.356/.539 bat in the lineup. It was bad enough that some folks were beginning to wonder if he was doomed to fit into the DH role.
“I feel good,” Munyiga said in a late afternoon phone interview. “I know that I can get better. It’s just a matter of a step at a time. I’m really motivated to do that, you know? I get bored sitting on the bench and waiting to hit. I like playing every part of the game.”
The final assessment of Munyiga’s situation isn’t due until sometime before Christmas, but so far it looks like there might be a special present under the tree for Krill Fans everywhere.
