Can This Team Win 60 Games?

August 12, 2057: Marshall Islands – In the category of this is why the Krill cannot have nice things, young right fielder Michael Buckley has been diagnosed with tendonitis. While the team doctor suggests he might be able to play through it, Bikini management has decided that with the club struggling to win, discretion is the greater part of valor. They announced today that the future star is being placed on the disabled list, and that journeyman minor leaguer Robert Shepard is being called up to replace him.

“It looks like he’ll be sidelined a month,” said manager Richard Lawson. “Same as Napolean.”

“Napolean,” being Napolean Mellott, the young second baseman who everyone was so high on, and who broke in hitting .500 before being sidelined with a hamstring problem.

Hello Injured List.

With middle infielder Manuel Hernandez also on the IL nursing a strained rib cage, fellow journeyman Micah Roberts has been recalled because, as Lawson said. “we think he might be able to play somewhere in the infield and really, no one wants to watch Wilson Andrade play.”

The moves lead some to wonder if the club has any chance whatsoever of cresting 60 wins this season. At 45-75, they project to 61 victories, a far sight below where the world’s pre-season projections placed them. But filling their roster with minor league players — though some might argue that had already been happening — does not bode well.
