2058.04 - The Long Beach Independent - Oops, They Did It Again

WHY?

August 19, 2058
Long Beach, CA

It's almost as if someone in the Long Beach front office forgot about Jay Hodge and Mitchell Purssell AND Carlos Flores, as they decided to send away prospect Júlio Barajas to Atlantic City for YET ANOTHER 30-something starting pitcher, this time by the name of Eddie Armstrong.

Eddie Armstrong made 5 starts for the Surfers, pitched 22.2 innings, allowed 22 runs, 33 hits and 6 home runs. His record was 1-4 and the nerds credit him with negative 0.3 WAR but honestly that sounds generous.

He did pitch two scoreless innings against Nashville in the Doubleday Series that saw the Surfers be swept by the dynastic Bluebirds. So, I guess that's cool.

Will they ever learn?

Armstrong is under contract for one more season at $7 million dollars, as he will look to improve on his 8.74 ERA with the Surfers.

Rob will chime in to tell me it doesn’t matter but I just don’t like that he essentially only throws three types of fastballs.

That's fair but it doesn't seem to have prevented him from being a decent mid-back end of the rotation guy.

Except in long beach of course.

Is a slider considered a type of fastball? I mean would a OOTP reliever who sported a fastball, slider duo be challenged due to his repertoire?

Slider is a breaking ball. A pitcher who features only a fastball and a slider is going to have more pronounced platoon splits.
