SURFERS SIGN PITCHERS
January 26, 2057
Long Beach, CA
The Long Beach Surfers recently announced the signing of 28 year old right handed starting pitcher Ralph Boyd to a 4 year, $31 million dollar contract, with team options for two additional years at $8 million each. Boyd was declined his final year of arbitration with the Montreal Blazers despite a fine 2056 season, pitching 156 innings with a 3.79 ERA and 3.1 WAR. With his 9/6/8 ratings, he should slot into the middle of the Surfers rotation and will be expected to continue his streak of five seasons of starting at least 30 games.
Of note, Boyd joins other pitchers in the rotation with relatively low movement ratings, an break from tradition for the Long Beach organization.
In other contract news, star reliever and 2056 Jason Egan Award Winner, Scott Everard has reportedly signed a 4 year, $24 million contract extension. The contract has a mutual option for a fifth year at $6 million, followed by a team option for a sixth year at the same rate. The 2056 campaign was a breakout for the 27 year old righty, throwing 103 innings with a 2.53 ERA and 3.2 WAR. Everard, born in Southend-on-Sea, England, was drafted by the Surfers in the first round of the 2050 Amateur Draft.
Interestingly, pitchers with high movement still seem to be prioritized in the Long Beach bullpen, with Everard's rating of 11 being the best, followed by multiple others with 9.
