Calgary Cuts Ties With Walter

The Calgary Pioneers have announced that the team will not sign closer Joe Walter to an extension and will allow him to seek a new team in free agency. According to the team the decision was mutual. This comes as a surprise since Walter has been the team’s closer the past 5 seasons.

“Hey I was willing to negotiate up until the end of the season and I was only asking about $4 mil a year,” Walter said. “They never made an offer.”

Calgary management would not comment on the player’s statement, but it was no secret that the team was getting frustrated with Walter’s performance. This season he posted a 7-8 record, with 23 saves and a 5.21 ERA. He also blew 7 saves. In fact over the last 4 seasons he has blown 26 saves and lost 32 games.

Retired Calgary pitching coach and pitcher who is number two on the team's all time saves list, Silas Thompson didn’t hold back when he was asked about the state of the team’s pitching staff.

“The first thing I’d do is get a new closer. Walter is terrible. He has a career record of 26-41 with an ERA of about 4.50. He also gives up 3-4 walks per 9. Those aren’t even numbers I would want in a back of the group middle reliever,” Thompson said.

“I coached him the first two years he was up in Calgary and I wasn’t all that impressed.” Gee Silas tell us how you really feel!

It is unclear if the team will fill his role from inside the organization or seek a closer in free agency.
