Calgary Herald Sports-Wrap - 1998 V.5

Post by KCCardinalFan » Thu Jan 06, 2011 8:02 am

The Marauders have continued their bi-polar season, moving into second place at the all-star break only to fall back to .500, and then going 11-6 so far in August to pull back into Wilcard contention. "I would love to see some consistency in this ballclub, it hasn't been easy watching this club sometimes but I have to admire their fight. We have had our backs up against the wall a few times, whether due to injury or just poor breaks, but we have never stopped fighting hard every game." Was GM Johnson' response to the up and down nature of 1998 campaign. "Our rotation is not a solid as it needs to be, and we will have to rely on our offense to carry us on the down nights. I don't know if it will be enough to jump the several teams ahead of us, but it will give this city something to cheer for."

There have been some nice stories so far in August, again with the offense leading the way. Catcher Gustavo Maldanado is hitting .424 in August and is tied for second on the team with 14 RBIs, all without a single homerun. Sadaharu Oh, Jr. returned from the DL to lead the team with 16 RBIs, while team MVP Johnie Iraq hit .342 with three homeruns. Also worth mentioning is Chris Coll, who hit .250 with three homeruns and ten RBIs in his first full month at the big league level.

Two strong pitching performances are also worth noting. Jonathan O'Neil has started four games in August going 3-0 with a nice 2.45 ERA while Closer Paul Alfred is 4-4 in save opportunities and did not allow a run in five appearances.

I'm surprised Coll has gotten off to as slow a start as he has.

I'm not worried, I think he will get going. Rookies usually struggle right? :banghead:

I would be terribly worried if I were you. You should immediately demote him and trade him to me for cheap ;)

Sure, if those trade talks begin with Mitrani or Blaine. :D
