For the first time in multiple generations, the Des Moines Kernels will be playing playoff baseball. The historic futility of this franchise is well documented, with their last playoff appearance coming in 2008 (for reference the new longest drought is only since 2043). This is exactly the outcome that ownership had when they hired GM Aaron Weiner and then subsequently GM Randy Weigand after Weiner departed in a cloud of scandal following the Ronnie Hubbard incident.
When asked what it meant to be the one to end the drought Weigand gave a small smile and said "obviously it is great to make it back to the playoffs, but this is just one step along the path that we have in mind here. We do not want to just be content with making the playoffs, we want to be serious contenders for division, league and Landis titles. We think the pieces are in place here to start making a serious push towards those objectives.
