Luis Mendoza surprised some this week by electing to not opt out of his current deal with Omaha, instead opting to be satisfied with the $82,000,000 that Omaha is now on the hook for over the next 5 seasons. Well, assuming Mendoza was the same for 2059 and 2060 and takes the final $30,800,000 spread evenly over those 2 seasons.

Mendoza was great for Omaha last year with a 4.9 WAR, which was a step back from his prior season in Louisville where he had an 8.1 WAR thanks to a 182 OPS+. Mendoza, who turned 33 in September, hasn’t showed any signs from scouts of slowing down.

Despite Mendoza opting in, Omaha has reportedly told Mendoza not to get too comfortable. That likely means that Mendoza is coming up in trade discussions with other teams, despite Omaha not having a clear answer at third base if they were to move on from Mendoza after just one season.

For his career, Mendoza has a 142 OPS+, 74.6 WAR, and has been a plus defensive glove. Last season, he hit his 400th career home run, and was selected to his 9th career all-star game.

Looks like he's comfortable in his recliner, robe and slippers and all.
