Richard Vernon, the shortstop prospect who's been fast-tracking his way through the Rockville Pikemen's minor league system, is getting the call to the bigs. The 20-year-old switch-hitter is expected ri get his feet wet in a utility role.
"We've been putting a lot of pressure on Ruben," said manager Denny Dooley, referring to second baseman Ruben Alvarado. "We'd like him to focus on second and let the kid spell him and Socrates [Kazantziakis]."
Vernon adds added flexibility along with Alvatado and Cam Whitten, both in terms of switch-hitting and the ability to play multiple positions. "We're still trying to see how the chips settle," continued Dooley. "I'm excited to get another dynamic, young player in the mix."
Fresh from his flight from Dodge City, the newest member of the Pikemen said he wanted to soak in all he could from team leaders like Kazantziakis, Julio Barajas, Brian Dixon, and Danny Leach. "I've got teammates who know this game, who know this town. Watch and learn."
