2059.11: Rummaging Bears - Starting Pitchers

3/18/2059

As they rummage a campsite some Bears find picnic baskets while others are shooed away.

Sure-Fire Locks
SP Arnold Cantrell, SP Rubén bin Majid al Din, SP Fernando Ferretti, SP Morgan Tomsett

Cantrell is a known commodity as an innings eater at this point. Ruben bin Majid al Din finally lived up to his ratings last season in his first year in San Fernando, pitching 198 innings with a 3.77 ERA. Both pitchers have several years of team options coming up soon so could become valuable trade chips should we fall out of the playoff race. I’ve probably been too loyal to Fernando Ferretti after extending him for his final arbitration year with a $3M salary. He’s not good but he does eat innings, having thrown at least 160 of them four years running. Last season he had a 4.52 ERA and from 2056-2057 he was worth 2.6 WAR each year. The still not fully developed Morgan Tomsett is set for the fourth spot in the rotation. Even if he doesn’t fully develop, he’s a similar pitcher to Ferretti with a lack of stuff but excellent control and movement, ready to eat innings.

Near Locks
SP Candrata Parmar, SP Ben Weaver

It feels like just yesterday Candrata Parmar came out of nowhere to solidify himself as a top prospect for the San Fernando Bears. Now 27 years old and out of options, Parmar is the lone lefty vying for a spot in the rotation. Finishing the development of his two pitches would help; as is, Parmar is too home run prone to start games in Chico’s Bail Bonds Field. In 145.2 career BBA innings he has a 5.31 ERA and 26 home runs allowed. The most likely outcome for him is to be my third lefty out of the bullpen. That would leave the final rotation slot for rule 5 draft pick Ben Weaver. Weaver comes over from Atlantic City with little track record of statistical production but an outstanding scouting report. He’s 28 years old so we’ll temper our expectations, but if he can finish the development of just a few of his pitches he’d have a deep and effective pitch mix.

Trying to Break-In
SP Rick Marriott

Rick Marriott was just drafted in 2058 and already has a 60 OVR rating. He had no difficulty making the transition to the professional ranks, pitching to a 2.71 ERA in AA and a 1.29 ERA in two starts in AAA. Marriott’s a well-rounded pitcher without any weaknesses. He’s struggled some this spring so I’ll send him to AAA for some final seasoning. With a hot first month he could overtake one of the players listed above him.

Breaking in the Back Door
SP Omar Thind

Thind’s come a long way since being cut by Long Beach in 2053. His 3.19 ERA in AA last year showcased his potential. After achieving outstanding results improving his control over the offseason I think he can carry his momentum thru AAA Brooks and have a chance at the San Fernando pitching staff in 2059.
