Galaxy Gas 2059.08 – Coaches’ Corner - Jamestown

Post by DugoutDesperado » Mon May 06, 2024 2:08 pm

The AA Squad in the Valencia farm system otherwise known as the Jamestown Comets finished the 2058 season with a 32-108 record. Finished 57 games out of the division lead and 49 games out of the wild card.

How did the Comets finish with such an anemic record? There are no shortage of answers to thar question. From the defensive side of the ledger we can see that the Jamestown was dead last in runs scored against and last in starters’ ERA (6.57). On the other side of the plate, the Comets were also at the bottom of the heap in batting average, On-Base percentage and runs scored.
So why did the team fair so poorly. Was it the talent of the players (or lack thereof)? Was it the coaching? Were there other factors like team dynamics the prevented more W’s from getting placed in the Comet’s scorebook?

It is hard to tell which factors resulted in the implosion, but in this article, we will look at the coaching. “After all, it doesn’t matter how you slice a turd, you are still going to end up with a piece of crap,” long-time fan Justin Paine stated.

Manager Alan Willis leads the team at Age 39. After his rookie managerial season with the A-level Redwood City ball club where he went 55-85 in 2057, he was promoted to the AA club last season. Looking at his ratings, he is Good on developing players, Average on coaching mechanics, OK on teaching pitching and Fair on teaching hitting.

Pitching Coach Yusufu Benhassi at age 54 completed his second season with the Comets. Looking at his ratings, he is Average on developing players, Excellent on coaching mechanics and Average on teaching pitching.

Hitting Coach Jose Ortiz is on the verge of turning 48 and has been with the Comets the last five seasons. During those five seasons they have only finished with a winning percentage over .250 once when they went 48-92 and they have never finished within 44 games of the division lead. , His ratings includes OK on developing players, Good on coaching mechanics and Excellent on teaching hitting.

There were not a lot of coaching options left when the new front office came to Valencia, but expect some moves next offseason in Jamestown either via coaching replacements or training.
