Tropic Times Vol. III.III (April 21 - April 30 2000)

Post by EchoesIE » Wed Apr 13, 2011 2:02 am

Honolulu, HA -- After a great middle of the month, Hawaii quickly fell back into their horrible habit of posting sub .500 records. This week was no different, as the Tropics finished 3-6 over a 10 day span. The offense was relatively stagnant compared to weeks prior, but there was still some bright spots: 2B Tim McGraw is finally finding his stride at the plate after it's been missing the majority of the last 9 months. OF Jose Aguirre continued smashing the ball (but not much else) as he now leads the Tropics with 9 Homeruns. Pitching has always been the weak-link for the Tropics, and this 10-day stretch wasn't any different, and no Tropics pitcher with more than 15 IP posted less than a 3.20 ERA. Lets hope the Tropics can find their groove as the first month of the season is finally in the books.

April 21
Hawaii 3, Greenville 4
The string of 1-Run games continues, this time with the loss column finding the Tropics. SS Jim Oneill went 3 for 4 with an RBI. 2B Tim McGraw finished 3 for 4 as well, with a double. But credit has to be given to Greenville starting pitcher Jay Lee, who registered 15 strikeouts against the Tropics. The biggest strikeout culprits? 3B Robb Wells, who was sat down 3 times in his 5 at-bats. SP Remington Little didn't toss too bad of a game considering he got the L, Remington pitched 8 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits with 6 strikeouts of his own.

Tropics take the long flight home and relax

April 23
Chicago 1, Hawaii 4
After a long flight back to Hawaii, the Tropics seemed refreshed to be playing in the beautiful Hawaii spring. It was feast or famine for CF Mark Gosselaar who went 2 for 4 with 2 singles and 2 strikeouts. SS Jim Oneill continued to produce, with 2 hits in his 4 at-bats. OF Jose Aguirre pinged his 8th Homer of the season to cement the lead in the 7th. SP Mark Shellenbarger was back to his form that the Tropics have come to know and love. Shellenbarger pitched 7 innings, giving up 1 earned run, while striking out 7. Shellenbarger picked up his 4th win of the year, while CP Brian Fisher recorded his 6th save of the campaign.

April 24
Chicago 15, Hawaii 9
24 combined runs, and 25 combined hits gave the fans a wonderful offensive display. 7 Different Tropic's pitchers saw action, but in the end it was SP Dow Jones who got the L due to his 6 earned runs in just 2 innings pitched. 13 Tropics saw at least one at-bat, OF Mark Gosselaar kept his hot streak going, finished 3 for 6. C John Behnke, and 1B Steven Tyus also finished with mult-hit games.

April 25
Chicago 2, Hawaii 3
A much more subdued game saw the Tropics victors in this incredibly short game that registered just over 2 hours long. OF Mark Gosselaar couldn't be stopped at this point, going 2 for 3 with twin doubles and 2 runs. OF Jose Aguirre had only 1 hit, but made it worth it, with a solo shot in the 3rd for his 9th homerun. SP Israel Martinez made his finest outing of the year, pitching 8 innings, giving up 5 hits and 1 earned run.

April 26
Baltimore 7, Hawaii 2
To say this game was interesting would be a compliment. Besides SP Remington Little pitched horrible -- 7 ER on 9 hits, in 7.1 IP and the only half-interesting offensive thing was a 2-run jack from OF Mark Gosselaar in the 5th.

April 27
Baltimore 5, Hawaii 4
This one took 11 innings to finish and was a much better ballgame than the days previous. 3B Robb Wells and OF Silas Camarena both doubled. OF Mark Gosselaar made his single in the bottom of the 9th count -- driving in 2 runs. SP Mark Shellenbarger pitched an iffy-game of 6 innings pitched, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out a season low of 4.

April 28
Baltimore 7, Hawaii 0
The series sweep was complete as Hawaii failed to plate even a single run, and was held to just 4 hits. SP Dow Jones again showed he might not be starter material, going 8 innings -- allowing 10 hits and 5 earned runs. All 4 offensive hits were singles, and there wasn't a single player worthy of mentioning this game.

April 29
Madison 8, Hawaii 3
SP Israel Martinez was throwing meatballs in his 2.2 innings pitched, allowing a ridiculous 7 earned runs on 7 hits. It was game over from the 3rd inning, despite valiant efforts in the 4th and 7th inning by the Tropics. 2B Tim McGraw was 3 for 4, and constituted half the offense with his solo shot in the 7th. 3B Robb Wells tacked on 2 hits in his 4 trips to the dish.

April 30
Madison 2, Hawaii 3
The whole game was decided by the 5th inning, as the Tropics scored all 5 in the inning and never had a hit past the 6th inning. OF Mark Gosselaar was 3 for 3 with a double, while OF Silas Camarena was just 1 for 4, but had all 3 RBI on his double in the 5th. SP Remington Little pitched a fantastic 4-hit ball game. CP Brian Fisher gave up just 1 hit in the 9th for his 7th save.

Offensive Player

OF Mark Gosselaar
Gosselaar was pretty manly in his 35 at-bats in the stretch, getting on base a total of 17 times: 4 walks and 13 hits for a .436 OBP. Gosselaar had 3 doubles, 6 RBI, and scored 4 times on his way to the his first honors this season.

Pitching Player

SP Remington Little
Little finished with an unimpressive 1-2 record with an ERA just south of 5. But don't let those numbers lie, Little pitched 23.7 innings, gave up 20 hits, but also struck out 15 for a WHIP of 1.39 and a OAVG of just .230.
