Tropic Times Vol. II.V (June 1-10 '99)

Honolulu, HA -- Big changes are afloat on the islands. Freddy Bilbao was traded on the last day of May, and there have been numerous other shoppings of current players by General Manager Josh Cornel. Cornel, who in a press conference on the first of May stated "June first is the deadline date for the club as it stands. All the players know this, if we're not even in June, things will change." Bilbao had been the Tropics one bright light throughout the rough times, and Bilbao had been the Tropics undisputed leader of the pitching staff despite only being 24 years old. The trade with Des Moines cost the Tropics 1 good player, but netted them at least 3 suitable players with major potential and 3 more that have all the potential in the world. Topped with 4 picks in the first 2 rounds of the draft, the Tropics minor league system got a much needed jolt of talent. The last 10 games for the Tropics were tricky, as have every game the Tropics have played this season -- sometimes looking like the team from last year that led the division for the entire season, minus the last 2 weeks. The next game, however, the Tropics look absolutely little-league like, getting put down by a rather poor starting pitcher. Things will change in Hawaii, but if they can keep the fan's interest long enough is the riddle at this point in the season.

June 1, 1999
Hawaii 5, Louisville 0
SP Leo Lopez has disagreed with the Tropic's management all season long, and things came to ahead shortly after the Bilbao trade. Lopez looks like he took out the frusteration on the Sluggers of Louisville. Lopez pitched 7 innings, gave up 4 hits and 0 runs. 3B Robb Wells went 2 for 5, with a homerun, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI to lead the Tropics. CF Mark Gosselaar went 2 for 3, with 2 runs scored and a double in the 5th inning.

June 2, 1999
Hawaii 6, Louisville 0
With Bilbao gone, no one was sure who the next pitcher would be to step up and provide the high-energy lead the Tropics need. SP Steven McCullough has been that man, pitching 8 innings. McCullough allowed 7 hits, but 0 runs to earn the win and bump his overall record too 6-3. 2B George Gutowski went 2 for 3 in the 7th spot, including a homerun. Gutowski finished with 2 runs and 2 RBI. OF Reddie Ray went 2 for 4 as well, hitting a 2-out double in the 6th. Ray also finished the game with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

June 3, 1999
Hawaii 4, Greenville 6
Despite a fairly good offensive output, the Tropics just couldn't pull it together. 3B Robb Wells went 2 for 4 with a run-scoring double. SP Felix Pan continues to downward decline into oblivions and we're sure the only reason he's still starting is the $10 million check he cashed when picked up from the waiver wire. Pan pitched 6.0 innings, allowed 4 runs on 8 hits.

June 4, 1999
Hawaii 2, Greenvile 5
13 different Tropics came to plate in this game, but only 5 of them got a hit with only 1B David Smurf having multiple-hits. 2B George Gutowski hit his 3rd homerun of the season, a 2-run shot in the 3rd that was the Tropic's only serious offensive moment. SP Angel Miranda might as well of setup a tee on the plate, Miranda pitched 2.0 innings, gave up 6 hits and 4 runs. SS Tim McGraw was injured while turning first-base on a double-attempt and was tagged out. McGraw will be out up to 3 weeks with a left-knee injury.

June 5, 1999
Hawaii 3, Greenville 1
The Tropics offense decided to do something, pounding 11 hits. 4 different players had a multi-hit game. C Robin Larker went 2 of 4 with 2 RBI. 3B Robb Wells continued his offensive production, going 2 for 4 with a run, in yet another game. SP Remington Little was impressive, pitching in 8 solid innings. Allowing only 5 hits and 0 Earned Runs.

June 6, 1999
Hawaii 4, Vancouver 8
C Robin Larker made his single-hit of the evening count, knocking it over the wall for a solo homerun. RF Silas Camarena went 2 for 4, with a double. Camarena finished with 2 RBI and a run scored. SP Leo Lopez cooled way down after blowing up in his first start of the stretch. Lopez gave up 5 runs, on 8 hits in just 4.2 IP. Four other pitchers combined to finish the game, with MR Ralph Desjardins being just as painful to watch as Lopez. Desjardins gave up 3 hits, 3 runs, and walked 1 in only 0.1 IP.

June 7, 1999
Hawaii 5, Vancouver 6
Hawaii posted 11 hits in the loss. 7 of the 11 batters had at least a single hit. 4 of the 7 had doubles. C Robin Larker had a 2-run double in the 8th inning. RF Silas Camarena, 3B Robb Wells, and OF Reddie Ray all doubled in the losing effort. Again, SP Steven McCullough was fantastic on the mound, going 8 innings, allowing 3 runs (none earned) on 6 hits.

June 8, 1999
Hawaii 7, Vancouver 3
RF Silas Camarena was the star of this show. Camarena went 2 for 4, and hit his first grand-slam of the year in the 3rd inning. CF Mark Gosselaar and 1B David Smurf each homered as part of their 2 for 4 day. SP Felix Pan finally showed he was capable of doing something on the mound. Pan finished the game with 3 earned runs, on 5 hits in 8.1 IP.

June 9, 1999
Hawaii 2, Vancouver 3
The Tropics were held to only 5 hits in this game, with OF Jorge Abad's 2-run homer in the 7th inning the only runs scored in the game. SP Remington Little held the game together pretty well, allowing only 3 hits and 1 ER through 6 IP.

June 10, 1999
Valencia 5, Hawaii 0
The Tropics were blanked in this Thursday game. 3B Robb Wells went 2 for 4 to highlight the Tropics offense. RF Silas Camarena did hit his 21st double of the season on a 6th inning line-drive. SP Travis McKinstry pitched 7 innings, allowing 10 hits and 4 runs.
