Tropic Times Vol. II.III (April 11-20 '99)

Post by EchoesIE » Tue Feb 08, 2011 12:30 am

Honolulu, HA -- While improving on their starting record of 2-8, the Tropics managed to eek out a 4-6 record over the past 10 games. The Tropics took the last of a 3 game set against California, before dropping 2 of 3 to Valencia. A series of highscoring affairs saw Hawaii lose 2 of 3 to Baltimore and split the games against Washington. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season, and not in a good way, is the attrocious .228 batting average that GM Josh Cornel has to be steaming about. The Tropics have struggled in all aspects of their game, and we wouldn't be surprised to see GM Cornel start moving pieces of the Tropics puzzle around, trying to get something going.

April 11, 1999
Hawaii 2, California 1
A game that went 12 innings and saw Crusaders SP Sammy Bodeen nearly pitch a complete game. 3B Robb Wells, and RF Silas Camarena each had a 2 for 3 game. SP Freddy Bilbao went 7 innings, giving up a hit in each inning and also gaining 6 strikeouts in the process. The game as a whole was relatively uneventful, with only 2 doubles and no homeruns being the biggest offensive production for both teams.

April 12, 1999
Valencia 7, Hawaii 4
Although the Tropics attempted to come back from a 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the 9th, they were unsuccesful. 3B Robb Wells had a homerun as part of his 2 hit, 2 RBI, 2 run day. C Kevin Bulder had a double that was his single hit of the evening. SP Dow Jones was something horrible in his 7.1 IP, giving up 5 ER on 13 hits.

April 13,1999
Valencia 3, Hawaii 4
Although the Stars outhit the Tropics by double, the Tropics came back for a walkoff win at home. SS Tim McGraw hit a 410 foot blast in the bottom of the 9th to win it for the Tropics. OF Jorge Abad went 2 for 3 with a run scored, while 1B David Smurf had a 1 for 4 day with a double. SP Angel Miranda went for 8 IP, giving up 2 earned runs in the process.

April 14, 1999
Valencia 5, Hawaii 3
The Tropics somehow managed the 3 runs on just 5 hits on the day -- but thats not saying much: RF Silas Camarena had a 2 run homer in the 4th. A quad of pitchers threw in the game for the Tropics, SP Felix Pan started the game before being yanked after 6.1 IP, following Pan were MR Chase Pack, MR Ralph Desjardins and MR Travis McKinstry who all combined for 2.2 IP and 3 earned runs.

April 15, 1999
Hawaii 6, Baltimore 9
The Tropics scrapped together 8 hits in this game. Leading the way was 2B George Gutowski who went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. RF Silas Camarena continued his hitting streak, going 2 for 4 with an RBI. A total of 6 pitchers were used by Hawaii in this game, SP Remington Little couldn't get past the 1st inning, being pulled by the manager after retiring just 3 hitters and giving up 4 runs on 4 hits.

April 16, 1999
Hawaii 1, Baltimore 0
The first shutout of the year belonged to SP Freddy Bilbao who pitched 8 strong innings, giving up 5 hits while striking out 8. CP Leo Lopez closed the game for his 3rd save. On offense, it was relatively quiet with 11 hits combined. 2B George Gutowski went 2 for 2, and RF Silas Camarena managed to increase his hitting streak to 5 games after singling in the 8th.

April 17, 1999
Hawaii 7, Baltimore 10
Both offenses erupted this game, with the Tropics knocking 15 hits compared to Baltimore's 16. This game was an exception to any baseball rule, however, as the score was just 3-3 going into the 12th inning. The Tropics scored 4 in the top of the 12th, but Baltimore rallied like madmen to score 4 to tie, then hit a 3 run bomb to win it. 1B David Smurf was long overdue for an offensive outing and got it in the form of a 3 for 6 day with 2 HR, and 3 RBI. OF Jorge Abad had 3 hits, CF Clark Devereaux had 2 hits, Silas Camarena had 2 hits as well. SP Dow Jones could only get through 8 innings on the bump, allowing 8 hits but no runs.

April 18, 1999
Day Off!

April 19, 1999
Hawaii 4, Washington 8
The offense for the Tropics continued to roll and the pitching continued to stink. 3B Robb Wells couldn't help but hit the ball as he went onto a 4 for 5 game with a double and a homerun. 7 different Tropics registered a hit, including Silas Camarena extending his hit streak to 7 games. Pitching by commitee still seems to be the theme this year, 6 different Tropics took the mound -- and the biggest blame goes on SP Angel Miranda who gave up a ridiculous 4 runs on 6 hits in 3.0 IP. MR Ralph Desjardins couldn't even buy a strike, pitching just 0.1 innings and allowing 3 runs on 4 hits.

April 20, 1999
Hawaii 6, Baltimore 5
A 9th inning rally saw the Tropics surge ahead of the Monarchs on this Tuesday afternoon game. Silas Camarena had his hit streak end, but C Robin Larker went 3 for 4 with 2 Homeruns. Larker tallied 3 RBI and 2 Runs Scored. 3B Robb Wells continued his hot streak, going 2 for 4 with a double and a run. CF David Morgan was the saving grace, hitting a 2 run homerun in his pinch-hitting go in the 9th. SP Felix Pan was downright gross, pitching 4 innings, allowing 6 hits and 5 runs. CP Leo Lopez got his 4th save of the year.

George Gutowski proved his worth in the middle infield, hitting .303 with 2 doubles, a homerun and 5 RBI.

Despite the Tropics pitchers doing much of anything, Bilbao is still the most deserving of the award. Bilbao pitched 15 innings, gave up 12 hits and only 1 Earned Run. Bilbao struck out 15 on his way to a 0.60 ERA and a WHIP of 1.00 flat.

That's a pretty good run from Bilbao.

Bilbao's come a long way from a couple years ago when I was making the lineups for Hawaii for basically half the season.
