GM Suffers Loose Lips
October 17, 2055
“I don’t care what anyone says, or whatever vote happens between a bunch of besotted journalists,” said Sacramento GM Ron Collins as he swilled a martini during a break from the city’s 24-hour celebration of victory in the BBA post season. “He’s the mother f’n Egan Award Winner in my book.”
That “he” Collins was talking about was Felix Vidaca, the guy who had just thrown a gutsy 3-inning save against a Nashville offense that was expected to take home the Doubleday crown. Sure, maybe Collins was riding a little high, and sure, Vidaca has only been with the team since late June when Collins acquired him from Atlantic City, but he’s got a point. Since that time Vidace transitioned from starter to stopper and hasn’t looked back.
Here is his line since arriving.
Year/Team/League | G | W | L | SV | ERA | IP | HR | BB | K | BABIP | FIP | WAR | ERA+ |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Regular Season | 42 | 6 | 2 | 8 | 1.67 | 81 | 5 | 22 | 79 | 0.204 | 2.85 | 1.9 | 255 |
Postseason | 2 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1.5 | 6 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 0.235 | 1.78 | 0.3 | 284 |
Note those innings pitched. At 81 regular-season innings in July-September, Vidaca has been blazingly good. In six innings over two outings during the postseason, he’s been better. Keep him with the team all season, and that translated to 12-4 over 160 innings of 255 ERA+ pitching.
“The guy’s not getting saves because we don’t use him that way,” Collins said, obviously feeling his oats as well as the vodak.
A moment later an assistant came and edged him away from the conversation.
“What Ron meant to say,” the assistant said, “was No Comment.”
