Fans Fume Following
Hillson Release
Chicago, July 15, 2049 -- Those sentimental fools who call themselves Black Sox fans are more than a bit livid this afternoon following the announcement that the team had released longtime catcher Spencer Hillson after he refused demotion to AAA.
"We wish Spencer nothing but the best," said GM Mike Dunn in a canned statement likely written by his crack PR staff. "He's been a loyal member of our organization, and we will always appreciate his hard work."
Spencer's future is uncertain
Weight: 200 pounds
Batting Average: .096
The other major complicating issue is that the Black Sox have two other catchers at the big league level, 30-year old Pedro Gomez and 24-year old Rafael Elias, and few clubs if any carry three catchers until September. "He was a victim of a numbers game," said one clubhouse source. "The first number was three, the number of big league catchers, and the second number was .096, his batting average."
Still, Hillson's departure is being felt among the fan base and in the clubhouse:
Hillson spent parts of seven seasons with the Black Sox dating back to a cup of coffee in 2043, but never became a starter. His best season came in 2046, when he hit .252.
