Bobby Beat 1999 v4: Sixpack Streak, Roleplayers Re-signed

Post by jiminyhopkins » Tue Mar 15, 2011 2:47 pm

Washington, DC--

September 20th was a pretty busy day for one of the Bobs' best young players.

Second baseman Joe Sixpack awoke to the news that he was named Johnson League Player of the Week, hitting .520 during the week aforesaid. Then came that night's game at Greenville, where the 26 year old proceeded to bang out 5 hits. This offensive display raised his season averages to .351/.405/.511 and extended Sixpack's hit streak to 20 consecutive games.

Sixpack's performance this season has assured his starting role at second base for next season, allowing the Bob's opening day 2B Matt Burgoon to walk as a free agent. It also allowed 2B Zebediah Williams to be placed on waivers and claimed by Greenville. Williams' morale can best be described as "Angry", no doubt exacerbated by having to watch his replacement bang out 5 hits against his new team.

In other news, Washington has begun shoring up the squad for next season, resigning a couple of veteran role players to contract extensions. Catcher Tyler Ryan, known more for his defense than his bat, actually agreed to have his salary cut in half in exchange for two more years under contract, taking the savvy backstop to age 38. In addition, 34 year old RF Terry Blass was inked to a 2 year extension of his own. Thankful for this opportunity, Blass has raised his season percentages to .301/.343/.501. "I'm just thrilled to be on the same club as guys like Neil McKinney and George Goutones. Plus we have a lot of good young guys coming up in the system. I'm glad to stick around for a while and see what happens," Blass said.
