Slugger Shavings 2059.2 - Off-season Punishment Assignments

Post by RT60 » Sun Apr 21, 2024 10:45 am

GM BP initially questioned the new league-wide option to allow players time during the off-season to focus on skill development. He was surprised the players union allowed it, and he wasn't sure he would want to subject any player in the Sluggers organization to such punishment. Spend the winter on the beach somewhere or report to chilly north-central Kentucky for 3-4 months? Hmm.

Then he remembered the team won just 64 games in 2058. The lowest in his tenure as GM. The time for coddling is over. But who would he send? Was it worth sending veterans during a rebuild? Or does it make sense to risk the kids? What if they get hurt? What if they are emotionally damaged from being taken out of their safe space?

After much thought, he made the following decisions:

Greg Shaw - Why send your 32-year old ace one asks? Shaw is fragile, still walking on eggshells since his torn UCL in 2047. He has been fortunate to avoid serious injuries since then, but the cloud remains overhead. The Sluggers have him under contract through 2062. Maybe the rebuild is over in his final contract year and they are able to squeak into the playoffs. Crazier things have happened, and just in case, Louisville needs their best pitcher throwing the ball. Shaw will report for strength and conitioning.

Ford Prefect - Similar to Shaw, the Slugger's have another starting pitcher who is one injury away from early retirement. Ford Prefect was going to be a game-changer, but six dead arms, a torn UCL, a sprained ankle, and even heart palpitations have kept the former top prospect from reaching his true potential. At this point, the Sluggers just need to him to stay alive. He will also report for strength and conitioning.

For both Shaw and Prefect, GM BP was able to find some old video recordings of what appears to be a workout regimen in a garage sale down the street. Given the Slugger's current financial predicament, it will have to suffice. The picture on the outside of the videos look legit.

Two other starting pitchers will also be reporting to the camp. Darrel Burns will work on his movement, Bryan Ellender will work on his control. The Sluggers have high hopes for these two young pitchers being fixtures in the rotation for years to come.

Former first-round pick Cade Miller appears to be destined for a permanent role in the bullpen and will be working to increase his velocity.

Off the mound, the team is ordering the following to report:

Amphibian Johnson will work on his plate discipline in an effort to get on base even more at the top of the order. He has CF locked down for many years.

Gustavo Canales will work on improving his defense in LF since he appears to be a stud offensively. He has LF locked down for many years.

Taylor Michaels will work on improving his contact. Perhaps he will hit over .200 to go with his superb defense. Either way, the team has invested a lot of money in him, and needs him to hit the ball again.

Both Ka'im Khayri and Gary Grant will work on cutting down on strikeouts. The team has veteran Khayri under contract for a while and Grant is showing a lot of promise after his rookie season in 2058.

Is "just keeping someone alive" a new off-season training program? haha
