Moonshiners Monitor, Vol. 1.9: McGrevey signing

Post by lchronister » Wed Sep 08, 2010 9:49 am

Looking to improve last year's middle-of-the-pack ranking in bullpen ERA, Greenville signed veteran hurler Mike McGrevey early in the free-agency period.

The fairly popular 31-year-old righty signed a 2-year deal worth $680k per season and is expected to be the team's mop-up/long reliever.

"We wanted someone to be able who was able to come in and clean up when games got messy," Moonshiners general manager Levi Chronister said. "Mike's not the greatest pitcher in the league, but he should be a nice addition to our bullpen and put a few more asses in the seats."

McGrevey went 6-11 with a 5.58 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 31 combined games (23 starts) with Birmingham and Des Moines last year. Greenville hopes a move to being strictly a relief pitcher will help those numbers, which seems a reasonable hope considering his numbers with the Kernels (2-5, 6.72, 1.54 in 12 games, all starts) were worse than they were with the Bandits (4-6, 4.52, 1.47 in 19 games, 11 starts).

Every single one of my pitchers struggled last season, so I'd just discount his Des Moines numbers.

Oops, my bad (and apologies). That's what I get for trying to write this at 2 a.m. last night

Yeah, he's not great, but for a cheap bullpen arm who can take up the pointless innings I don't want wasted on someone useful, I thought he was a good addition.
