GM Poll - How much per year would you commit to sign SS Mark Wareham
With two years of arbitration left for Mark Wareham, Twin Cities will be facing decision time soon.
Early attempts to sign a short term extension (3 years) to try to close out the arbitration years have been unfruitful... to put it mildly... very mildly.
More importantly though, the Front Office is getting preliminary indications of Wareham’s asking price for the long term.
I may be new, but I’m pretty aware this decision is likely to set the future for Twin Cities for several years.
Wareham is such a unique player, I’m having trouble putting value on him.
- Top 10 fielder at shortstop.
- Decent power - 20-25 HRS per year
- Walks A LOT!! Set the BBA single season walk record last season. Looking lead the league in walks again for the 4th season in a row.
- Good base stealer
- Terrible batting average <- Sabermetrics says who cares
- Good OBP - typically .400+
- Stikes out ALOT. Has also lead the BBA in this stat too.
His WAR always hovers around 6.... which is likely boosted by his steals and playing shortstop.
Anyway... let me know what you think. I basically have two seasons to figure out the long term situation with Mark. If I decide to sign him long term, I’ll have to let a few of the current players go.

Won't get him for what I'd pay.
My strategy would be "keep him for the final arbitration year and decide what to do next year."
He's already had two years of arbitration salary.
Next year should be his last, shouldn't it?

assuming you were going to build your franchise around him (so the cap is less of an issue), I think 17-20 is fair. I would rather have him than reece wareham and he just got 17/year on average.

Using J.J. McQuade as a barometer, someone will give him $25M.

lol
Let’s just say that a little PP investment in community service may be in order the next couple of off seasons

He's the best SS in the BBA right now. Sign him to the best deal that you can and if you are not comfortable with the contract, trade him away for 3-4 solid prospects ASAP.

He's only got one more off-season of eligibility for that, so best to not wait on it.

Winner right here...
Currently he’s asking for $24+Mil/year (after the two Arby years)
I haven’t tried bringing him down yet, but I’m hoping for the best.

I’m liking v19 as far as salary demands go. Players SHOULD want to test FA more often and ask for a lot to avoid the opportunity. I’m seeing that too. Mei wants 18M/year as well.

I agree with this. If these types of demands continue on it’ll make roster construction interesting in the next few seasons. I have nearly 50% of my cap tied into 4 players (luckily two come off the books very soon)JimBob2232 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 18, 2018 6:20 pmI’m liking v19 as far as salary demands go. Agreed. Certainly more realistic.7teen wrote: ↑Sat Aug 18, 2018 7:31 pmI agree with this. If these types of demands continue on it’ll make roster construction interesting in the next few seasons. At the end of this season he'll have 5 service years, so next year is his last season of arbitration/team control.

I complete believe y'all... So why is the player salary page projecting two more years of arbitration?
Twin Cities - Player Salaries
Seriously, if you guys hadn't said anything, I would have assumed he has two more years left and that could be have been bad.
Thanks again...

Cause he hasn't hit 5 years yet. Just a few days away though. Here is some strategy for you. Since you have already clinched a playoff spot, if you demote Wareham to AAA for this short 4 day sim, he will be eligible for 2 more years arb.

...
Can we pre-emptively report sleazy activity or do we have to wait for it to happen?
