I traded Kiplinger...big effin' deal.

Post by ryankcollins » Sat Feb 12, 2011 8:04 pm

Since this is the forum for trade analysis, why don't we use it for such. I was with family all day at the zoo and visiting my cousin who is on suicide watch (going through rehab for addiction and a divorce as a result of addiction...prayers please) and I'm kind of shocked at the comments from two owners. Here's my thoughts:

- I didn't trade my franchise away. I traded Juan Nieves who is 34 years old wanting a 4-year extension at 8.0M a year...I wasn't going to resign him.

- Kiplinger is a great pitcher, but I traded a pitcher (one of the best in the league) that I only use every fifth start and some scrub that I wouldn't be using at all for 5 players I believe will develop and be utilized in the future (and players I got to pick and think I needed). I got 5 players for 1, in essence.

- I made the trade, so I don't feel like I got "raped." You may think so, but I would not have made the trade based on my evaluations if I were under the impression that I was getting screwed. It's awfully ironic that the division rivals are the ones throwing a fit.

Quite frankly, today almost made me reconsider being in an online league. Seriously...the whole "backlash" about Kiplinger is absolutely ridiculous. I'm here to have fun and that is it. If my franchise takes a dive and it is known as trash from here on out...oh well, I get to have fun trying to bring it back up. I had fun making the trade, I've had fun in this league...but this trade crap has been a major buzz kill. Relax. It is a game and nothing more. I'm here to have fun and now I'm under the impression that I have to walk on eggshells and be criticized when I'm attempting to enjoy the money that I spent for this game. It's going to be extremely annoying (and I won't stick around) if you're going to be criticized for decisions you make when you're just wanting to have fun.

I would not make a trade that I did not think was right for me. I liked my trade and you are free to disagree. But don't criticize the decision and suck the fun out of the league because you did not evaluate the trade the same as me. Seriously...quit whining and have fun. I'm having fun and that's all that matters. What's the worst that could happen? I get to rebuild my franchise (which I already planned on doing).

Have fun.

I fully endorse this message. Each GM has to live with his decisions.

I have to agree with this as well. I mean come on...take a step back and realize that this is a game. The fact that any GM would be made to feel this way due to criticism of a trade in a FANTASY game is crazy. Relax everyone and give credit to Brad for being quick on the draw and able to pull off the deal.

Honestly I am not the issue here, but if folks are going to be made to feel like crap because of a trade (luckily Ryan is even-headed) who is going to want to hang around here?

I mistyped in my previous post - I think I can speak for Ryan when I say that trade critiques are interesting to read, but with some civility and courtesy perhaps.

Except I will shoot back at you that this is only a game. I didn't make barbs at the way he lives his life, his facial features, his job choice, his intellect or his raison d'etre. I DID criticize the way that he runs a fantasy baseball team in a fantasy baseball forum. If he feels that bad about it, I'd recommend he stick to shuffleboard, or horseshoes.

i agree 100%. I caught a little flack a couple of seasons ago when i blew up my team and traded my best pitcher (Chip Foodie) for prospects. Well a few seasons later look at my team now. The players i received in the multiple trades i made that season have turned out fantastic and I do believe I have the 2nd best record in the entire league right now.

Just in case anyone was wondering, the guy who was criticizing loudest? Moi - but of course.

Just to remind, here was the Foodie deal...

SP Chip Foodie ML
SP/RP John Davis ML

Madison sends

3B Chris Hartley AAA
SP Evander Kilkenny AAA
LF Juan Deolezal AA
SP Jose Escobar AA

Hartley wasn't bad (a legit starter at short) but he's since sadly retired. Dolezal has done nothing. Escobar has done nothing. Kilkenny WAS nothing and cost California a ton of money.

Foodie's won 35 games in two years and this year he's 5-0 with a 2.54 ERA, and his VORP last year was equal to the VORP of all the other players in the deal combined in all combined years.

Not that I'm saying that I can predict the future, of course...

This one. Though I'm willing to hear how, other than the coincidence that I'm in the same division as you, that my judgment is compromised.

Go ahead. Break down the deal and tell me what he got for Kiplinger. I'm absolutely fascinated to hear your explanation. If it makes you feel better, pretend I'm the owner of Baltimore.

Naah, You have a problem lettings things go (and I can't say I don't, so I'm going to try something different). Unless someone negates the deal I'm done talking about it and ready to listen to folks who want to critique the deal in a manner that doesn't demean folks, show compromised ethical standards, and avoids using terms that are demeaning or just plain wrong.

I'd prefer to look at this deal a year or two from now and see how things play out. I learned a bit about BAPIP and defense from our Skype discussions the other night (thanks Matt!) and want to see if things hold true. Izatt right now has a BAPIP through the roof and his stats I think are showing it. My piss-poor defense - how is that going to affect Kip's numbers? That's what I'm interested in. Not some fella hiding behind impartiality but really continuing to throw a stinkfit like my 4-year-old when they dont' get a lollypop.

Moving on!

I got nothing to be evasive about. Matt saw the dealings, saw they were on the up-and-up. Two division rivals crying about a deal (and one hiding behind their position) but avoiding that piece, now that's evasive.

Dude, I've already addressed the divisional rival thing. I have no idea why you're so stuck on that. I don't know what Lynch's motives are for his comments, but I do know what mine are, and I assure you, my interest is with Chicago, not Marquette, and not Birmingham. Get over yourself.

I'm a narcissist dude, I can't get over myself. I'm the focus of everything!

You, on the other hand, won't let this die and apparently want everyone to eval talent the way you do (and if you don't you're a moron deserving of motherly-like scolding). Shouldn't you heed your own words? ;)
