Cairo's hired a handful of new hurlers lately, both at the major league level and for the minor leagues. These include starter Afzul Chishti, the four-pitch 7/6/5 who threw for GBC rival Jerusalem the past five seasons. Chisti was drafted in the fourth round of the 2050 GBC draft. He averaged 33 starts and 185 IP the last three seasons, and he led the league in wins in 2056 and 2057. His ERA+ the last three years is 135+. and he led the GBC with a .252 BABIP in 2058. He'll be 28 when the '59 campaign begins and he has signed for two years, total of $6.8M. He accepted a no trade clause. He will start third in the rotation.

Gary Powers, who has pitched in the BBA for San Antonio and Boise (2055), was signed for a two-year deal worth a million dollars. He looked better in the game than he does on the HTTP. He may not last the season as the team's closer. He saved 12 last year for Tokyo, with a 4.99 ERA. He walked 4.1 per 9 innings.

Pitchers moved to the forty-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft include Enrique Serrano 5/6/5, with six pitches including a 9 fastball. Serrano sat out the last four seasons (2055, 56, 57, 58). He joined his family bringing Serrano's Restaurant to his native Mexico. He features an Iron Man duration and has been pegged to be first in the rotation for Triple A Pretoria. Second in that rotation will be Luis González (a New Orleans vet), 6/5/7 also from Mexico. He sat out 2057 and 58; maybe he was working at Serrano's. José Guzmán rounds out this trio of Mexican throwers. He is expected to start in the pen. He has not pitched anywhere 3 of the last 4 seasons. The tag for these three amigos is #CanTheyStillPitch.

Also signed to play at Triple A was Harold Newbold, 7/5/5. He 106 ERA+ last season with Sydney, 6-6 3.90 in 101 innings of swing work.

Meanwhile, veteran reliever Melvin Bork 9/4/4 was lost to Buenos Aires in the Rule 5 draft. He has a lifetime 1.65 WHIP and 4.7 BB/9.
