Papyrus 2059.04 : A sorry lot of catchers

The team, that is, the new GM of the Pharaohs, decided not to offer last year's starting catcher David Butler an extension. He was asking too much. I don't remember how how much, but it was too much. Plus he's 33 and is going to turn 34 in April. But he started 124 games and won the Platinum Stick Award (.312/.342/.763). Now he doesn't even want to talk.

That leaves the team with a sorry group of catchers, a lot of sorry backstops. The highest potential rating among them is 35 (down from 45 in August) :( for Milos Brabeuecs, who switch hits. His catcher rating includes a potential rating of 7. He is decent at blocking and framing (8 each), and an arm of 5. Last season he hit .203 at Double A.

There's five known catchers in the organization with potential ratings of 30. That includes the two currently on the active roster. These are last year's backup catcher Yoriie Daisen (age 29), who hit .259 (.602 OPS) while starting 38 games. He's expected to be the starter behind the plate if we can't drum up some more talent. And then there's Hanna Sameh, excuse me, Hanna "Shifty" Sameh (age 32), .222 BA, .580 OPS at Triple A.

The highest rated prospects are Sayyar Mu'tazz and Reynaldo Garza.
We had our eyes on at least two free agent catchers who would even entertain offers and other clubs are sure to sign them. We might be able to sign another pair of 30 rated catchers.

I wish I could trade you my main catcher. Really.
