Buenos Aires signs free agent SP Deron Alexander

2055 (Athens): 32 G, 32 GS, 181.1 IP, 12-8, 4.57 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, +4.1 WAR

As outlined in this beat report, the Brisas roster was set to be wiped out at the end of 2055 and the heavier load was on the pitching side - specifically, starting pitching. The team did have most of the turnover expected, but some of the losses were avoided. The squad still has to reload (or load, as the case may be).

They made a start by signing free agent SP Deron Alexander. Alexander comes to the Brisas after full seasons in the GBC at Cairo (2054) and Athens (2055). The two stops illustrated the versatility Teague has stated he looks for in pitchers - Alexander threw out of the pen in Cairo before being a full-time starter in Athens this past season. He pitched to a 3.73 and 4.57 ERA, respectively, for the teams.

The biggest question mark around Alexander is his control. He allowed 5.2 walks per 9 innings in Cairo but dropped that to 3.2 in starting roles this past season. At age 30, it's not unreasonable to hope Alexander adds another point of control, but it's highly unlikely. He does top 100mph on the gun and offsets that with a wicked slider and splitter.

"We're going to rely on Deron for quite a bit. He may be the face of our pitching staff. That said, he has an excellent profile for a cornerstone bullpen role if he struggles as a starter," said GM Ben Teague.

The deal is for 2 years/$5.3 million. The second year is a player option and he gets a $1.5m bonus if he nabs the Pitcher of the Year award. They'll get the full load out of the righty as he may rise to opening day starter.
