Today Niko Papadakis, owner of the Athens Fighting Centaurs, announced the sale of his team to Kalevi Karpinen. Karpinen is said to be an unmerciful character, with a fiscal personality of a penny pincher.
The entire Athens organisation by all accounts were kept in the dark about the sale of the ball club before and during the process, the end came about when Niko Papadakis agreed to sell the Fighting Centaurs to Hungarian media tycoon Kalevi Karpinen.
It's thought that Papadakis had become disillusioned with the GBC and the route it was taking. The final straw for the Greek tycoon was thought to be the announcement that teams would be based in Sydney with a 9,500 mile trip and Tokyo close to 6,000 miles away, not forgetting Sao Paulo (6,000) and Buenos Aires (7,200) with the likes of Cairo (600), Jerusalem (1,800) and London (1,900) appearing like mere neighbours compared to Sydney, Tokyo, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires.
Rumours have also spread that Athens could be on the move to Hungary, this had players contacting their agents to see if they could move to another team if the team did move to Hungary. When asked about the rumours new owner Karpinen neither denied or confirmed the rumours.
