Hold My Log - 57.43 - Bosendorfer Traded to Phoenix

Post by 7teen » Mon Jan 01, 2024 9:03 am

The unpacking of potential free agents continues in Portland as the team announced today that it has traded free agent to be catcher Adalgiso Bosendorfer to the Phoenix Talons in exchange for pitching prospect Endres Kumblin.

Bosendorfer was having a bounce back year of sorts in Portland this season. After a year in Twin Cities that saw him post a 0.3 WAR and a season in Charlotte that saw him bottom out to a -3.1 WAR, Bodendorfer was producing in Portland to the clip of a 1.3 WAR. He was batting .287/.346/.380 with a pair of homeruns and 41 RBI in 95 games played this season. He was having one of his better BBA seasons outside of his peak 2053 season in Charlotte.

"We wish Adalgiso the best" commented Portland GM Chris Wilson. "We loved the production he was providing for us behind the plate and with the bat. But we nor he had much desire to discuss contract extensions for the future at this point and with just 6 weeks left in the season we felt it best to get something in return for him while we could. And Adalgiso gets the privilege of being thrust into a post-season race with the Talons."

Bosendorfer goes to a Phoenix squad who has watched not one but two starting catchers go down in a matter of weeks. They lost their regular catcher Roelof Klooster in mid July to a torn calf muscle. After acquring Ron Shiplack in a trade a week later, the Talons faithful grimaced in agony when he too suffered a torn muscle last week (hamstring) and will likely miss the remainder of the regular season.

"I guess it's a good thing I have strong leg muscles" joked Bosendorfer on the news of the trade while he knocked on wood.

As for the player acquired in the trade by Portland, Endres Kumblin, he's a 24 year old southpaw who has spent most of the season in A and Short A ball for the Phoenix organization. The #9 ranked prospect in the Phoenix organization, Kumblin was a former 8th round draft selection in the 2050 GBC draft.

"He's a little older to be considered a prospect and he's a work in progress" commented AGM Kate Fiscus, "but we think there is something there we can work with. Having 4 good pitches means he was drafted as a starter and has been used in that role throughout his minor league career. But with some control issues, he may be better suited to drop a couple pitches and work primarily out of the bullpen. Honestly, we see a guy that could potentially work his way through our farm system rather rapidly and possibly be in the Portland bullpen rather quickly."

So much like the Rosales trade earlier this season with Long Beach, Portland continues to look to trade potential free agents for any prospect collateral they can find that may be of help in the future. It's almost like being an expansion team all over again!
