May was a tough month in the Pacific Northwest for the Portland Lumberjacks. The team went 10-19 and finished the month 25-29 to likely fall out of serious contention for a wild card spot in the Frick League. As we roll into June, the team now sits 6 full games under .500, 11 games out of the division race, and 3.5 games out of a stacked wild card race field. Nonetheless, there were some good performances turned in by players last month.

Top Hitter for May

Wilson Alomar
After an awful April that saw him hit just .197, Alomar rebounded in May and earned the team's top hitter honor. Alomar hit .394/.421/.566 in May with 3 homeruns and 16 runs batted in. He led the team with a 0.7 WAR for the month and his batting average, on-base percentage, and RBI totals were also team best in May.

Top Pitcher for May

Mike MacRobb
MacRobb spent the last week of the month on the IL with some back issues, but it didn't prevent him from capturing the team's top pitcher honor in May. Mike made 5 starts in May, going 2-1 with a 3.75 ERA in 24.0 innings pitched. He struck out 13 and walked just 4 while leading the team with a 1.00 WHIP and 0.7 WAR for the month.

I mean seriously! Eight of our pitchers had a negative WAR in May. Six of them had an ERA over 6.25 for the month! Four guys had WHIPs of over 2.00. Five guys had double digit walk totals. Which you might think it's too bad since some were starters. But when two of those 5 were coming out of the bullpen and only threw 15 and 16 innings respectively, it isn't good. Portland has now given up a Frick League worst 304 runs. But if you want a positive spin on things, those 304 runs would rank 13th in the Johnson League!
